Mahjong or Majiang, is a game that originated in China. It is commonly played with four players and is somewhat similar to the Western card game rummy. It is a game of skill, strategy, calculation, and a degree of chance.
The game was imported into the United States in the 1920s (and the first tile sets were sold at Abercrombie & Fitch!). There were many variations played during this time. The most common, which eventually became “American Mahjong” was most popular among Jewish women. The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), first formed in 1937 by Jewish players, is considered a Jewish organization. In recent years, a second organization has formed, the American Mah Jongg Association (AMJA). Both currently hold large-scale tournaments and events across North America.
